The Who - 1989-06-16 - Glens Falls, NY (SBD)

In 1982, as their fall tour came to a close, The Who announced that they were retiring. For a while, it looked like they meant it, as both Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend each released 3 solo albums between 1982 and 1989. In 1989, however, to celebrate the band's 25th anniversary, as well as the 20th anniversary of the album Tommy, The Who decided to reform and go back on the road. The good news was that each night of the tour was a 3 hour extravaganza, opening with selections from Tommy, followed by a mix of greatest hits lesser know material, and unique covers (such as hey Joe and Born On The Bayou!)  The not so good news was that Townshend, concerned about his tinnitus, decided to play acoustic guitar for most of the show.  That necessitated bringing on a 2nd guitar player, Steve "Boltz" Bolton.  The band had hoped to get Joe Walsh or Dave Gilmour for that role, but the former went out on tour with Ringo Starr while that latter went back on the road with Pink Floyd! They also replaced Kenny Jones on drums with Simon Phillips, while adding an entire brass section and a set of backing vocalists. The normally streamlined 4 or 5 piece band had grown ito 15 members, producing a sound quite unlike any previous Who tour, which in turn drew mixed reviews from the a band's fans. This soundboard recording captures The Who at rehearsals fro their reunion tour, in Glens Falls on June 16, 1989, 29 years ago today.  By the way, the date of this shoiw has some questions around it.  While the artwork and info files clearly state June 16, the bootleg title, "the Night before the Resurrection, implies that the rehearsal took place a day before the tour began. IF that's true, then this tape is from June 20, as the tour began on June 21.
