As the 1980s progressed, U2 moved from their new wave/dance roots toward a more serious and complex musical style. The albums War in 1983 and The Unforgettable Fire in 1984 expanded the band’s audience beyond the UK. Their set at Live Aid in 1985 brought them worldwide acclaim and positioned them to headline the 1986 Amnesty International Tour. None of that could have prepared the band or the music world, however, for what transpired in 1987 when they released their 5th album, The Joshua Tree. The album was filled with lyrics and music that, in Rolling Stone’s words, turned “spiritual quests and political struggles into uplifting stadium sing-alongs.” In the US, the disc debuted at #7 on the Billboard charts, then quickly climbed to #1, where it stayed for 9 weeks. The album yielded the band’s first two #1 singles, With or Without You and I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, as well as its first 2 Grammy Awards. In April 1987, the band became just the 4th act to appear on the cover of Time Magazine, demonstrating that their influence had transcended the music world.
