By the end of 1971, it was clear that Elton John was on the verge of super stardom. Critics and fans alike recognized his talent for producing great songs (Your Song, Levon and Tiny Dancer had all made the Billboard charts) and putting on high energy concerts (as captured on the live disc 11-17-70). In early 1972, Davey Johnstone joined the band on guitar and vocals, adding the final piece to the puzzle. In May 1972, Elton released the album Honky Chateau, which became his first #1 album in the US, spending five weeks at the top of the charts and spawning the hits Rocket Man and Honky Cat. Elton, his lyricist Bernie Taupin, his backing band of Johnston, Dee Murray and Nigel Olsen, and his producer Gus Dudgeon, would combine to rule the pop charts from 1972 to 1976, as 6 albums and 6 singles hit #1.
