1970s - #1: On April 2, 1972, 43 years ago today, a struggling artist by the name of Billy Joel played the Mar Y Sol Festival in Puerto Rico, as captured in this soundboard recording.  Joel's debut album, Cold Springs Harbor had sold poorly, and it wasn't helped by a mastering error that caused the tape to run too fast, which resulted in Joel's voice sounding unnaturally high pitched. He later jokingly said he sounded like Alvin and the Chipmunks!  Fortunately for Joel, his performance at the festival was brought to the attention of Walter Yetnikoff,  who signed the young singer/songwriter to a contract.  And the rest, as trhey say, is history!
