Earlier this month, we had a recent concert from Tanglewood, featuring James Taylor backed by the Boston Pops. Today, we go back to just the 2nd year rock concerts were ever performed at that historic venue for a show from Chicago, on July 21, 1970, 49 years ago today. Bill Graham, who brought rock to Tnaglewood, originally ran into an issue with this July 21 show. Joe Cocker, who was scheduled to headline, had to cancel due to health issues. Graham attempted to get Jimi Hendrix to fill the spot but those negotiations fell through. He finally booked Chicago to headline the show. The band had scored 2 recent top 10 singles, Make Me Smile, which reached #9 and 25 or 6 To 4 which hit #4. Still, Graham was concerned if Chicago had the horsepower to stand in for Cocker and Hendrix. The band erased any doubts with a monster show that left the audience begging for more.  In fact, the crowd only headed for home after guitarist Terry Kath came out on stage to explain that they simply couldn’t play anymore due to local curfew laws.
