San Francisco became synonymous with the Summer of Love, and no band symbolized the cultural changes taking place in the city by the bay more than the Grateful Dead. They were the house band for ken Kesey's Electric Kool Aid Acid tests and lived at 710 Ashbury in the city's Haight Ashbury district, home of the hippies. And their spiritual and musical leader, guitarist Jerry Garcia, was the poster child for the counter culture. Garcia was nicknamed Captain Trips, as he was the embodiment of the cultural, musical and psychedelic experimentation of the times. The year 1967 featured a multitude of classic albums and Garcia was heavily involved in two of them, the Dead's debut disc and Surrealistic Pillow, the break though album from the other pillar of San Francisco's psychedelic sound, the Jefferson Airplane. Jerry is credited as a "spiritual advisor" on Surrealistic Pillow, though, according to the Airplane's Jorma Kaukonen, Garcia, for all intents and purposes, served as the producer for the disc. For Garcia, 1967 was the start of a long strange trip that would be filled with musical and personal triumphs and tragedies, until we lost him way too soon in 1995. This soundboard recording from June 4, 1974, 7 years after the Summer of Love and 4 dozen years ago today,  captures Jerry with one of his favorite partners outside of the Grateful Dead, Merl Saunders. From 1971 to 1975, Garcia, and Saunders played over two-hundred and fifty shows together, mostly on the west coast. The two even released a live album together, entitled Live At The Keystone, featuring tracks from their concerts at that venue in Berkeley on July 10 and 11, 1973.
