Neil Diamond scored his first top ten hit the US in 1966 with Cherry Cherry. He had another in 1967 with Girl, You'll Be a Woman Soon, but his big breakthrough came in 1969 when both Sweet Caroline and Holly Holy and cracked the top 10. He followed that in 1970 with his first #1 single, Cracklin' Rosie. This soundboard recording of his performance in London on January 3, 1971, 412 years ago today, finds him riding that wave of success, and previewing what was too come. The penultimate song in his set was I Am I said, which would reach the #4 spot on the Billboard charts by spring of 1971!

Thanks for the post Speedy, Huge fan of Neil, especially this era, from the late 60s to the early 70s his absolute peak period. Remember seeing him on the Glen Campbell Show back in 69 performing Holly Holy and Sweet Caroline, also remember him on other variety shows including the Johnny Cash show back in 70 performing Cracklin Rosie which was a huge hit back in the fall of 70, also remember he and Johnny doing a couple of duets together on the same show. of course Johnny also had many other great artists on his show Neil Young and Bob Dylan just to name a few. Speedy what has happened to our music culture . Back then shows like this were everywhere . You had the Cash show, Glen Campbell who also had many great musical guests on his weekly show. Remember that Tom Jones had one as well in the late 60s. remember him singing a song with Joplin of all people. Even remember as a kid watching Simon and Garfunkel performing on the Red Skelton show back in 66. Of course there was Ed Sullivan who introduced the Beatles to America and the artists who performed on his show were the whos who of music greatness. How did we go from what was on the air then to the garbage of today. Dancing with the stars, American Idol ecc plus all the boring reality shows. Do you remember those days and those great shows speedy? don't know how old you are but assume that you have some memory of what was a truly special time. seems like yesterday and not 40 to 50 years ago, thanks Bill E
Thanks for the Neil Post Speedy, This was definitly his peak period mid to late 60s thru the early 70s long before unfortunatly he became a crooner . Remember seeing him on The Glen Campbell show back in 69, he did Holly Holy and Sweet Caroline, also remember him on the Johnny Cash show in 70 doing Cracklin Rosie then he and Johnny did a couple of duets , Boy those were the days so many great variety showcasing true talent unlike the garbage of today. Speedy did you ever watch the Johnny Cash show and Glen Campbells show back in the late 60s early 70s ? Neil made appearences on both. Johnny in fact had many great legends on his show Dylan, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell just to name a few. Great time for music Thanks

The Doors and the Who appeared on the Smothers Brothers as well as the Airplane , boy Grace was gorgeous back then ,my first rock crush, do you remember the who performing my generation , think it was the first time that Pete smashed his guitar think Keith Moon followed by destroying his drum set amidst a cloud of smoke while the brothers looked shocked and bewildered. Man those were great days..
