The Doors - 1969-05-23 - New York, NY (SBD)

In late April 1969, PBS spent 2 days filming The Doors for a television special entitled “A Profile of Jim Morrison and The Doors - On and Off Stage”. On April 28, the band was filmed performing 6 songs, including the only known complete live recording of the Soft Parade. The next day, an interview between Richard Goldstein and the Doors was recorded, during which in which Jim attempted to read poetry from his collection entitled from The Lords and The New Creatures. Later, on May 13, PBS filmed a panel discussion about the band that included Goldstein, Patricia Kennealy, William 'Rosko' Mercer from WNEW-FM, and Alfred G. Aronowitz. In between all that filming, a “little” incident occurred in Miami on March 1. During a concert that night, a very drunk and antagonistic Jim Morrison, who spent a good deal of the show taunting the audience and security, was arrested for allegedly exposing his private parts. Whether he did or didn’t is subject to debate until this very day. Despite the incident, PBS did not pull the show, broadcasting it on WNET in NY on May 23, 1969, a half century ago today.
