As we mentioned a few days ago, New York has always used its plethora of horse race tracks as venues for rock concerts.  In fact, on September 8, 1974, 38 years ago today CSNY took up residence at one for the final stop on their US tour, before they flew to England for a single show at Wembley on September 14. This one is from Roosevelt RACEWAY in Westbury, Long Island. Their August 8 show, exactly one month earlier, was from Roosevelt STADIUM in Jersey City, NJ, another historic Ny/NJ venue that we have discussed in numerous posts on this blog.  Now that we’ve cleared up the venue situation, it's on to the music. This show was another mammoth affair, 33 songs long, including 2 electric sets and 1 acoustic one. Maybe CSNY subconsciously knew this would be the end for a long while (next time they toured was 2000!), as they pulled out all the stops at this show. Right from The Love The One Your With into Wooden Ships opening pair, you can feel the energy that carried over into the entire performance. Carry On is a frenzied marathon, with the band seeming on the verge of disintegrating in a hailstorm of guitar lines and feedback. The sound is outstanding, as this is the show is the one complete soundboard from 1974 in circulation. Bruce Hornsby - 1990-09-08 - Holmdel, NJ (SBD)

As promised a few days ago, here’s Bruce Hornsby’s final solo performance before joining the Grateful Dead, from September 8, 1990, 22 years ago today. This soundboard recording captures Bruce at what was then called the Garden State Arts center in Holmdel, NJ, right off exit 116 on the Garden State Parkway. New Yorkers seeking to escape the city in the summer would often choose between the Long Island (such as Jones Beach, discussed in our September 1 post), and the Jersey Shore. Holmdel is just a few miles north of the beaches at Point Pleasant and Seaside Heights, two prominent Jersey Shore destinations. The Arts Center is a magnificent outdoor amphitheatre, with seating for 7,500 people under a saucer like roof, and room for another 10,000 on the lawn. The lawn seats were once the perfect spot to picnic under the stars while enjoying a show. Once PNC Bank acquired naming rights to the arena in 1996, however, concert goers could no longer bring in food while limits were placed on the size of blankets and lawn chairs that could be brought to the venue. Stephen Stills - 1979-09-08 - Brookhaven, NY (FM)

With today's post, we resume our "New York, New York" theme for September here at So Many Roads. While New York City has a host of world class, indoor concert venues such as Madison Square Garden, Carnegie Hall, The Beacon Theater, and Radio City Music Hall, the Big Apple and its surrounding communities often turn to their horse racing tracks to host major outdoor shows. For example, on September 8, 1979, 33 years ago today, Parr Meadows Race Track in Brookhaven, Long Island hosted a concert in honor of the 10th Anniversary of Woodstock. A crowd of 40,000 turned out for the show, hardly the “half a million strong” from 1969, but still twice what an arena the size of Madison Square Garden could hold. The ten hour show featured a number of artists who played at the original Woodstock Festival, though many of them were now flying solo, such as Country Joe McDonald, John Sebastian, Leslie West, Jorma Kaukonen, Paul Butterfield, Rick Danko and Stephen Stills. Stills made his independent status quite evident, playing just 2 song, For What It’s Worth and Woodstock, from his days with Buffalo Springfield and CSNY. In addition to a monthly theme, one of the other things we've tried to do this year is expand the roster of artists that we have posted.  Yes, we have lots of favorites here that we post frequently, such as The Grateful Dead, Eric Clapton, The Beatles, Paul McCartney, Elton John, CSNY, etc, but its also fun to broaden our scope. Grateful Dead - 1978-09-02 - Giants Stadium, East Rutherford, NJ (SBD)

Go west from Manhattan through the Lincoln Tunnel, hop on Route 3, and you’ll soon find yourself in East Rutherford, NJ, home to the Meadowlands, a huge piece of swampland that’s been turned into a sports and entertainment complex. Giants Stadium in the Meadowlands opened in 1976, and served as the home of the NY Football Giants, and later the New York Jets, until it was torn down in 2009 to make way for Met Life Stadium. Giants Stadium hosted its first concert on June 25, 1978, headlined by The Beach Boys and Steve Miller. On August 6, 1978, Aerosmith, Journey and Ted Nugent played the venue. I was able to attend concert #3 on September 2, 1978, 49 years ago today, featuring The New Riders, Willie Nelson and The Grateful Dead. We had general admission tickets on the stadium floor, meaning you found an empty space, set up your blanket and hung out. The day was brutally hot but fortunately they had plenty of hoses to spray down the crowd to keep us cool. The Dead’s performance was filled with high points, especially the Good Lovin > Scarlet Begonias > Fire On The Mountain to open the 2nd set, but was cut rather short. Just 1 song after the drums, then a quick encore and they were gone. Some say they had to finish up early so the parking lots could be cleared for the crowd arriving for night time races at the adjacent horse track. Others claim that they needed to head out early as their next stop was the Pyramids in Egypt, where they played 3 shows in October. Still others say that Garcia got annoyed with security hassling him about smokng a joint.

Bruce Hornsby - 1986-09-02 - Bottom Line, NY (FM)

The fiirst time I saw Bruce Hornsby was May 10, 1987 at Laguna Seca Racetrack in California. Bruce was leading-in for the Grateful Dead, the band he would eventually join in 1990 in the wake of the death of Brent Mydland. Until recently, I always felt that the Laguna Seca show was the start of the relationship between Bruce and the Dead. Bruce even played the Dead's I Know You Rider as part of his set that day. Then I came across this FM broadcast of Hornsby at the Bottom Line in NY on September 2, 1986, 26 years ago today. The Bottom Line was one of New York's legendary night clubs, a place where legends were born (see our August 15, 1975 Bruce Springsteen post), surprises abounded (see our May 16, 1975 Neil Young post) and career's relaunched (see our November 1, 1978 Van Morrison post). The Bottom Line was also a place where many artists gained their first national exposure, thanks to WNEW-FM's live broadcasts, such as this Hornsby concert.  Hornsby's Bottom Line appearance took place just a few months after the release of his smash debut album, The Way It Is. He played all 9 songs from that disc as well as I Know You Rider, months before Hornsby met the Dead at Laguna Seca. Maybe he had a premonition about the future! In any event, download this one to get a peak at an artist as he's just starting on the road to stardom.

Bruce Hornsby - 1990-09-01 - Wantagh, NY (HQ Audience)

As we mentioned, September is all about New York (and the Grateful Dead and Bruce Hornsby) at So Many Roads, and our first post reflects that theme. Located about 35 miles outside of New York City (a 50 minute ride that could take 3 hours on a summer weekend), the town of Wantagh on Long Island is the home of Jones Beach. Some 10 miles long, Jones Beach is one of New York’s most popular summer destinations, with upwards of 6 million visitors annually. Jones Beach is also the site of the Nikon Theater, a beautiful outdoor concert venue whose seats not only face the stage, but also the Atlantic Ocean! The theater was originally built in 1952, and hosted musicals, as well as Guy Lombardo and his band, The Royal Canadians. In the 1980s, the theater became the summer home to concerts on the beach, promoted by Ron Delsner. The venue underwent 2 renovations in the 1990s, expanding its capacity to 15,000 seats. This high quality audience recording captures Bruce Hornsby at the Jones Beach Theater on September 1, 1990, 22 years ago today. Just 14 days later, on September 15, Hornsby would join the Grateful Dead for an 18 month stint as their keyboard player. Download this one, to hear Bruce at a landmark NY venue for his next to last solo show before his time with the Dead.
