Eric Clapton - 1983-02-06 - Sacramento CA (SBD)

Our 1st of two Eric Clapton Same Tour, Different show entries this month captures EC on tour in 1983, a tour few envisioned happening given Slowhand's physical and emotional state a year earlier. In January 1982, EC, having finally admitted he was an alcoholic, flew from London to Minneapolis to check into the Hazelden Treatment Center. On the flight, Clapton drank heavily out of fear he would never be able to drink again. Clapton is quoted in his autobiography as saying, "In the lowest moments of my life, the only reason I didn't commit suicide was that I knew I wouldn't be able to drink any more if I was dead. It was the only thing I thought was worth living for, and the idea that people were about to try and remove me from alcohol was so terrible that I drank and drank and drank, and they had to practically carry me into the clinic.” After being discharged, the doctors at Hazelden recommended that EC avoid any activities that would act as a trigger for his alcoholism. A few months after his discharge, Clapton began working on his next album, against the Hazelden doctors' orders. Working with Tom Dowd, Clapton produced the disc Money & Cigarettes, which he released in February 1983. The album’s memorable cover depicts Clapton, cigarette in hand, standing next to a melting Fender Stratocaster guitar. EC said he chose the album title and imagery "because, that's all I saw myself having left”. Despite less than stellar reviews for the album, the single I've Got a Rock 'n' Roll Heart went to # 18 on the Billboard charts. This soundboard captures EC on the 4th night of the tour in Sacremento CA on February 6, 1983, 31 years ago today. Santana - 1981-02-05 - San Francisco, CA (FM)

The late 1970’s and early 1980s were a time of change for Santana, as his music began to take on a more AOR (album oriented rock) flavor. Albums such as Inner Secrets in 1978, Marathon in 1979, and Zebop in 1981, had radio friendly singles such as Open Invitation, All I Ever Wanted and Winning, but began to alienate some long time fans who were unhappy with the change in direction. Perhaps the fans were onto something, because after the release of Winning in 1981, Santana would not have another chart topping song until Supernatural in 1999. While album sales plagued the band in the 1980’s, their live performances never suffered, as this FM broadcast from San Francisco on February 5, 1981, 33 years ago today clearly proves. As promised yesterday, here's part two of Elvis in Las Vegas in early 1973, a soundboard recording from his midnight show from February 3, 1973, 41 years ago today. Neither this or the previous day's show, it should be pointed out, featured Burning Love, despite the fact that the song had topped the charts in late 1972.  While Elvis had played the song during the Aloha from Hawaii broadcast, in truth he didn't particularly care for the tune nor did he feel comfortable singing it.  He did feel right at home, however, covering Neil Diamond's Sweet Caroline, which he included in his February 2 set list and appears here as a bonus track so you can enjoy it a 2nd time!

Elvis Presley - 1973-02-02 - Las Vegas NV (SBD)

Our opening installment of Same Tour, Different Show features a soundboard recording of The King on February 2, 1973, 41 years ago today. While today, Howard Stern has crowned himself King Of All Media, back in early 1973 that title belonged to Elvis.  In late 1972, his single Burning Love reached #2 on The Billboard charts, and #1 on the Cashbox Top 40 list.  The tune would be Elvis's 40th and final Top 40 hit. On January 28, 1973, MGM's film, Elvis On Tour, won a Golden Globe Award for best documentary.  Two weeks prior to that, on January 14, Elvis has played a concert from Hawaii which was broadcast around the world via satellite to an audience of over 1 billion people.  Ironically, the show was not broadcast live in the US as it conflicted with the Super Bowl.  American audiences had to wait until April to see the concert. RCA released a live album entitled Aloha From Hawaii Via Satellite, which captured the concert in its entirety.  The disc climbed all the way to #1 on the Billboard charts. So, As Elvis played`his annual winter schedule in Vegas, he clearly was on top of the world.  It would be all downhill for the King, however, from that point until his death in 1977.  Download this one now, then come back tomorrow for another entry featuring Elvis in Las Vegas in 1973.
