Willie Nelson - 1975-06-07 - San Francisco, CA (FM)

I've seen Willie Nelson live on one occasion, in September 1978 when he led in for the Grateful Dead. Actually, it was supposed to be Waylon Jennings and Willie, but the former no showed the concert. Willie didn't let that stop him from getting us fired up for the main event with a perfromance as hot at the weather that day.

This FM broadcast captures Willie 3 years before I saw him, in San Francisco on June 7, 1975, 4 dozen years ago today. That year, Willie released his first album with Columbia, entitled Red Headed Stranger. The disc tells the tale of a fugitive on the run from the law after killing his wife and her lover. Despite Columbia's concerns about the album’s sparse musical arrangements (it featured just guitar, piano and drums), Red Headed Stranger certified multi-platinum, making Willie one of the most recognized artists in country music. His cover of Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain, released as a single from album, became his first number one hit.

Neil Young - 1989-06-06 - Stanhope, NJ (Ex Aud)

Over the years I've seen Neil 6 times - 3 acoustic shows, 2 electric shows and once with CSNY. I've seen him play quiet, heartfelt. spare renditions of his tunes,and I've seen him stomp around, backed by Crazy Horse. like a man possessed, living up to his nickname as the Godfather of Grunge. I've seen him perform the rock opera Greendale and I've seen him help turbo charge on again, off again band mates Crosby, Stills and Nash. No matter what, one thing remained constant in all these performances - Neil stays true to himself and plays what moves him at the moment. 

This excellent audience recording captures an acoustic Neil performance, exactly 3  months before I saw him for the first time, and 34 years ago today, in Stanhope on June 6, 1989.

I've only seen the Stones once, in October 1989 at Shea Stadium, during their Steel Wheels tour, which is fine as one near death expereince per life time is more than enough.  As I've noted sevral times on this blog, it was hard to concentrate on the music as the upper deck swayed uncontrollanly throughout te show, lkeaving us convinced it was going to go crashing down into the levels below it at any moment!

This sounboard recoridng captures the Stones just a year ago today, in Munich, on June 5, 2022.  Missing from the line up was drummer Charlie Watts, who had passed awat less than a year earlier on August 24, 2021.

Jerry Garcia Band - 1983-06-04 - Poughkeepsie, NY (late) (SBD)

Besides the 50 times I saw the Dead live, I attended 4 Jerry Garcia Band concerts - in March 1978 at the Capitol Theater, in March 1980, also at the Capitol (a show that has been officially released), in August 1984 at Caldwell College and finally in November 1991 at Madison Square Garden (another one that has been officially released). Garcia solo shows were like Dead concerts in some ways as some songs overlapped, the set lists were unpredictable and the jamming intense, but unlike them in others. Garcia on his own played an amazing variety of covers not found in the Dead's set lists, broke out some of his rarer solo tunes, and took far more solos than he would when jamming with the Dead. To sum it up, seeing Garcia solo was not seeing the Dead, and vice versa. On July 7, 1981, I saw Carlos Santana in concert for the first time. I was about a month removed from college graduation, and enjoying a summer off before starting business school in the fall. My buddies and I were going to see Carlos at a new outdoor concert venue that John Scher had opened, the South Mountain Arena in West Orange NJ. When we arrived, we found out that it wasn’t quite an Arena. In fact, it wasn’t quite an Amphitheater or Hall or an Arts Center or anything quite so fancy. It was…THE SIDE OF A HILL. Yep, Mr. Scher, who above all knew how to make a buck, rented space in a large park, put a stage at the bottom of a hill, put up fences to keep out anyone without a ticket, and created a concert venue. I guess it’s a little late for me to complain, especially since I bought to tickets to several other shows at South Mountain that summer. All issues with the venue were forgotten once Carlos hit the stage. He played a blistering set, featuring songs from his latest album Zebop, as well as a host of classics. We had gone hoping that Carlos would play Open Invitation, and he delivered. You, see, when I was in college, a cover band called Yasgur’s Farm usually played Open Invitation to close their shows, which in a beer induced haze, probably sounded way better than it really was. In any event, that sort of became a theme song for my group of friends. Finally hearing Carlos play it live was one of the highlights of my concert “career”. I would get to see Carlos again in 1986 as part of the Crack Down concert at Madison Square Garden, which also featured CSN and the Allman Brothers.

I've seen U2 twice - once in August 1992 during the ZooTV tour and then again in October 2001, after the tragedy on 9-11, when the band's emotional tribute to the victims provided a much needed catharsis for us all.

This IEM Matrix recording captures the band in Albany on June 2, 2001, 22 years ago today and just a few montsh befopre I saw them for a 2nd time.  While, as my expereince attests, the last leg of the Elevation Tour is remembered for U2's remarkable tribute to the victims of the 9-11 terrorist attacks, the early parts of the tour were a celebration of the band's amazing new album, All That You Can't Leave Behind. Following the mixed reception to their 1997 album, Pop, U2 returned to their roots for All That You Can't Leave Behind. At the time of the album's release, U2 said on a number of occasions that they were "reapplying for the job of the best band in the world". The public and critics heartily approved, as the disc sold over 12 million copies and won 7 Grammy Awards. The songs Beautiful Day, Walk On, Elevation, and Stuck in a Moment You Can't Get Out Of all reached the top 5 on the Billboard charts in the United Kingdom. Of course, many of the album's songs, especially Walk On, New York and Peace On Earth, would take on new meaning in the wake of the events of 9-11.

The Holmes Brothers - 1996-06-01 - Glens Falls NY (SBD)

If you look at the page on this blog where I list all the concerts I've attended, you won't see any mention of the Fabulous Holmes Brothers. That's because I saw them so many times, at so many different blues clubs in New York City in the late 1980s that I lost count. I also had no idea that they would ever make it nationally, so I didn't think of documenting every concert like I did with other bands. In any event for those of you unfamiliar with them, the New York Times described the band as playing “Timeless, deeply soulful and uplifting gospel-drenched blues, street corner doo-wop, ballads, R&B, country and funk." This soundboard recording captures the Holmes Brothers in Glen Falls, on June 1, 1996, 27 years ago this very day.
