Believe it or not, I've been to 3 concerts by the Go Gos - once in November 1981 at the Palladium, the just a few months later in January 1982 at Madison Square Garden as the lead-in band for The Police, and then, some 18 years later in July 2000 at the PNC Bank Arts Center sharing the bill with the B52s! What can I say - its a guilty pleasure! When you listen to their first two albums - Beauty & The Beat, released in 1981 which went to #2 on the Billboard charts, and Vacation, released in 1982 which went to #8 on the charts, you simply want to get up and dance. As Nick Lowe would say, its pure pop for now people! 

This FM Broadcast captures The Go Gos some 4 decades after they burst on the scene, at the Whiskey A Go Go, the site of some of their earliest performances, on December 14, 2021, 4 years ago today.

Neil Young - 1989-12-13 - Rotterdam, Netherlands (Ex Aud)

Over the years I've seen Neil 6 times - 3 acoustic shows, 2 electric shows and once with CSNY. I've seen him play quiet, heartfelt,, spare renditions of his tunes, and I've seen him stomp around, backed by Crazy Horse, like a man possessed, living up to his nickname as the Godfather of Grunge. I've seen him perform the rock opera Greendale and I've seen him help turbo charge his on again, off again band mates Crosby, Stills and Nash. No matter what, one thing remained constant in all these performances - Neil stays true to himself and plays what moves him at the moment.

This excellent audience recording captures Neil just a few months after I saw him live for the first time, doing an acoustic show in the Netherlands on December 13, 1989, 3 dozen years ago today.

A Holiday Gift - Re-Posted Led Zepelin Links

As a holiday gift to everybody who follows this blog, I have re-posted links to every Led Zepplin show on So Many Roads! I picked Led Zep because 1) they are one of the biggest bands in history and 2) most of our Zep posts go back to the earliest days of the blog, meaning the original links are long gone.  Follow this link to all the Led Zep shows on this blog.

These new links, like all free ones, will expire in 30 to 60 days.  That said, don't hammer the links all at once - that's the fastest way for the host to delete them for overloading traffic.  Grab a show or two a day, then come back the next day for another couple, and so on.

Just a couple of notes:

• This took a long time - I did my best to get every show - if I missed something, just ask nicely and I'll get a link up
• I was running lots of simultaneous uploads to get this done  - it's possible I attached the wrong link to  a show or two - if I made a msitake, just ask nicely and I'll get it corrected
• I only did individual Led Zep posts - not festivals where they appeared, not Plant & Page shows, not Plant solo, not The Firm, etc.
• I did not upload anything that has been officially released since the original upload

If this goes well, I may try other bands in the future, time permitting.

Allman Brothers Band - 2008-12-12 - Asheville, NC (SBD)

I've seen the Allman Brothers live twice - once in July 1979 right before their early 1980s break up and then again in October 1986 at the Crackdown on Crack concert with CSN and Santana. Both shows were at Madison Square Garden. Unfortunately, neither show found the band in peak form, though the latter included a great guest appearance by Felix Cavaliere of The Rascals on Good Lovin', which might be the only time the Allmans ever played that tune. 

This soundboard recording captures the Allmans at the annual Warren Haynes Christmas Jam in Asheville on December 12, 2008, 17 years ago today.  The bands gets help from numeorus guest s- check out the back cover of the artwork for complete details.

John Hiatt with Nick Lowe & Paul Carrack - 1983-12-11 - Hamburg, Germany (TV SBD)

Today's post features 3 artists, all of whom I've seen live.  John Hiatt was the first show I attended after a 2 year hiatus due to the pandemic, on September 25, 2021 in Morristown. That was 34 years after the first tine I saw Hiatt, in August 1987 at the Pier in New York City. That gap is the 3rd longest time for me betwen seeing an artist, behind America (38 years between 1978 and 2016) and Pat Benatar (40 years between 1981 and 2021).  I saw Nick Lowe for the first time in July 1979 as part of Rockpile, at the same bill as Blondie at Belmont Race Track.  Then I saw Lowe for the 2nd time on April 1, 1983, backed by Paul Carrack. They led-in for Tom Petty.

This TV soundboard recording captures Hiatt, Lowe and Carrack in Hamburg on the German televison program Rockpalast on December 11, 1983, 42 years ago today.  Four years later, Lowe would help Hiatt record his breakthrough album, Bring The Family.
