EC 1974 - Back To Back - #1: he year 1974 marked EC's triumphant return to the top of the rock world. After playing at the Rainbow Concert in January 1973, Clapton worked to kick his heroin addiction and finally was united with long time love Patti Boyd, who had been the inspiration for Layla. He recorded the album 461 Ocean Blvd in the spring of 1974. The disc would go to number 1 on the Billboard charts after its release, as would the single from the disc, I Shot The Sheriff. EC went on the road in support of the album in June 1974, his first tour since 1970. This soundboard recording captures Slowhand during that famed comeback tour in Columbis on July 4, 1974, 50 years ago today. Unfortunately, while EC may have been clean of heroin, he had found a new demon. Slowhand sounds sloshed at many of these 1974 shows, the result of his growing dependency on alcohol.
