Grateful Dead - 1980-04-01 - Capitol Theatre, Passaic NJ (SBD)

Capitol Theatre - #1: The Capitol Theatre in Passaic NJ was unlike any concert hall in world. Rock and roll venue by night, the Capitol was an x-rated movie theater by day. The theater was owned and run by legendary concert promoter John Scher, the Bill Graham of the East Coast. Scher started producing shows at the 3200-seat Capitol in 1971, soon after the Fillmore East closed. Thanks to Scher, many of rock's largest acts, such as The Rolling Stones, The Grateful Dead, The Who and Bruce Springsteen, would play shows at the Capitol long after they became superstars selling our 50,000 seat stadiums. In 1980, The Dead played a run of 3 concerts at the Capitol on March 30, March 31 and April 1. The first of those 3, which I was at, featured a guest appearance by John Belushi during the encore of US Blues.  The final night, on April 1, 1980, 38 years ago today, as captured in this soundboard recording, saw the Dead play their own little April Fool's joke on the crowd.
