2000s - #4: Beginning in the 1980s, Rio De Janiero, became host to several rock festivals. The Rock in Rio series, for example, launched in 1985, with 10 nights of shows that attracted 1.4 million people to see headliners Queen, George Benson, Rod Stewart, AC/DC, James Taylor and Yes. Rock in Rio 2 took place in 1991, then it was another 10 years before Rock in Rio took place in 2001. Headliners for the 3rd edition of the festival included Sting, Iron Maiden, REM, Foo Fighters, Britney Spears, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Neil Young. This FM broadcast capture’s Neil’ set, accompanied by Crazy Horse, on January 20, 2001, 18 years ago today,

thanks for the Neil posts Speedy ,big fan, Are there any live officials that are free of overdubs? want to epanf my Neil collection but all the blogs ive been to say its practully impossible to find anything official that hasent been tampered with in the studio. Was thinking about Massey Hall and live rust. Dou you happen to know if they are warts and all? thanks
Thanks for the kind words. Sorry - I really don't know whether or not the Neil live releases have any studio effects added. It's not something I pay much attention to or spend a lot of time on.
Forget Live Rust,, full of overdubs and edits.Neil basicly redid everything in the studio. stick with bootlegs of the 78 tour many of which sound great no worry about overdubs there As for Massey was pleasently suprised to learn that apparently nothing was added . a true warts and all recording also no warts as Neil was in fine form which only adds to my conviction that the truly great ones don't need to mess up a good thing by tinkering in the studio Massey Hall, Grab it its the real deal one of the very few undoctored officials out there

Anonymous number-one, approximately 0.097% of official live recordings are "warts and all". They are very, very rare.
Thanks for the info about officials even though its very depressing. As a huge fan of live music i do feel deceived. I realize many people don't see the big deal similitur to The current deflate gate scandel concerning the patriots. However when something is advertised as live then it should be live. I agree that the artists have the right to do what they want however dumb it may be because it is their music but as a consumer i also have the right to know if what im buying is as advertised. Just like when you purchase tobacco or alcohal, it clearly states may cause health problems on the labels. Well why not do the same to official live releases. I feel that many people would buy them anyway but the weird purists like me i guess would be forewarned.. Read in a few blogs that overdubbing was much more common in the 70s when live albums were very common and that the best way to insure that what you are getting is real is to purchase archival releases from decades ago. For example i suppose it would be very difficult to overdub an old show by Hendrix or the doors as everyone is now either too old or dead. same with the dead. The stones ya yas was released at the same time as they were touring and was nothing but a studio recreation . however the recently archive shows Brusssels 73 , LA Forum 75 and the like supossedly were overdub free.. who knows for sure. I have the boots and the officials and still prefer the boots. Mick Taylor is way too far down in the mix on Brussels official as opposed to the bootleg where he is front and center.Heard rumors that Mick J and Keith lowered his guitar in the mix by design because of the still lingering resentments of 40 years ago when he left the band. The fact that they still havent released any other shows with taylor thru their archives while releasing many Ron Wood shows proves that they are still sensitive to the fact that they were never as good after he left the band and want to distance themselves from him. Back to bootlegs. Heres hoping that one day the artists will get it right by their consumers. Maybe they should release two versions of a show one warts and all and the other with all the studio enhancements . that way everyone would be happy
Speedy want to give you a heads up about a Neil show from japan 3/3 1976, just downloaded it and was blown away. Was recorded by someone who calls himself Mr Peach , ever hear of him? Hes supposed to be the japanese Dan Lampinski or Mike Millard you really need to get that show if toy are a big Neil fan. sound unbelievbly good
Buying an official album advertised as live that really is a studio album in disguise is the equvalent to say purchasing a Fake Rolex watch. It may say Rolex on the dial but it aint a Rolex or also say you order what you think is fried Shrimp and it is mostly bread with a tiny piece of shrimp on the inside. In any other situation this would be classified as false advertising. How the record companies can get away with this deception is beyond me . Maybe legally speaking if 5 per cent of a recording is live that means it's live SHAMEFUL

Stay away from live albums where the artists are directly involved with the releases
Zep boots claim to have no overdubs but are edited beyond belief almost as bad as overdubs in my opinion
Always do research before purchacing an official, some undoctored gems do come thru but they are very rare

correction , i meant zep officials were edited even went so far as to use multiple sources to create one song UGH, also credence/ the concert/oakland 1970 no overdubs
Your risht, both Zeps. HTWWW and SRTS, were heavily edited ,as for overdubs stairway from htwww has a melatron added from a show almost a year later which completly takes away from the authenticity of the show.. why they would do this is beyond me.
i believe that bowies santa monica 1972 is overdub free but they did edit out the between song banter , same with moody blues isle of wight 1970
All of Robert Plants very funny insightful between song banter is edited from all the official live releases , The man is a tremendous storyteller and has the crowd eating out of his hand, A real shame that they left all that out. really takes away from the music. Also as for great storytellers on stage Jim Croce, truly funny and insightful. Neil Young can be very funny on stage as well with his biting humor as evidenced by Massy Hall one of the few undoctored officials out there
