1970s - #5: They recorded a double album, of just 14 songs, which flopped both critically and commercially upon release. They played about 30 concerts in the UK and about the same number in the US, mostly at small clubs and theaters. Their tour was marked by massive drug abuse and alcohol consumption. They split apart almost as quickly as they came together, with tension between the band members and paranoia due to all the drugs making it impossible for them to record a 2nd album. They were Derek and The Dominos, and their one studio effort, Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs, is now regarded as one of the masterpieces of rock and roll. The title track is one of the most famous songs in rock history, and other tunes from the album, such as Bell Bottom Blues, Anyday, Keep on Growing, and Why Does Love Have To Be So Sad, are all classics. It is one of the albums I grew up with, that I bought just about 2 years after its release, that I wore out the groves on, that helped foster my everlasting love for all things rock and roll. This excellent audience recording captures Eric Clapton, Bobby Whitlock, Carl Radle and Jim Gordon on their one and only tour, on November 26, 1970, in Cincinnati, a half century ago years ago today. Of note - they get some help from the one and only BB King on the last tune of the night!
