1995 - After an Independence Day concert in Santa Monica in 1974, Steely Dan retired from touring to focus on studio recordings. Band leaders Walter Becker and Donald Fagan had tired of the grind associated with live performing and preferred to focus on song writing and album production. After producing 4 more albums (Kati Lied, The Royal Scam, Aja & Gaucho) between 1975 and 1980, Becker and Fagan announced a split in their partnership in June 1981. It would be another 12 years before the two would formally reunite, ironically, to produce 2 solo albums. Becker produced Fagan’s album Kamakiriad, while Fagan returned the favor by serving as co-producer on Becker’s 11 Tracks of Whack. Even more irony followed, as the two then reformed Steely Dan, not to record an album, but to go on tour! While their 2 solo albums didn’t sell all that well, their live concerts received rave reviews. They had such a good time on the road in 1993, they “did it again’ in 1994. Then in 1995, they released the album Alive iN ameica, a live disc that featured recordings from the previous 2 years' tours. To clebrate the rlease of the disc, Steely Dan hosted a performed a brief radio concert on October 17, 1995, 27 yeeras ago today, at the Manhattan Center in New York City.
