Happy Together Tour  - 2010-06-06 - Big Flats, NY (Ex Aud)

The Happy Together tour, which began in 1985, was the brainchild of Flo & Eddie (real names - Mark Voman and Howard Kaylan), who were original members of The Turtles, a band with direct ties to 1967.  In fact, the 25th anniversary of the Happy Together Tour, as captured in the excellent audience recording from June 26, 2010, a dozen yearss ago today, features 5 acts, each one linked to 1967 in one way of another:

• The Turtles: Had their only #1 hit in 1967, Happy Together (hence the name of the tour!), which knocked Penny Lane out of the top spot. Happy Toegther was an excellent example of an interesting dichotomy in music in 1967. While critical attention in 1967 was focused on the psychedelic sounds of albums such as Sgt Pepper's and Surrealistic Pillow, the singles chart was still filled with breezy pop tunes and one hit wonders.  Songs such as Windy by The Association, Incense and Peppermints by the Strawberry Alarm Clock, to Sir With Love by Lulu and Ode to Billy Joe all went to #1 on the Billboard charts in 1967.  
• The Buckinghams:  Also had a #1 hit in 1967, with the tune Kind Of A Drag. That song spent two weeks in the top spot, sandwhiched between I'm A Bbeliver and Ruby Tuesday. All in all, the band had 3 top 10 singles and 5 top 40 hist that year!
• Paul Revere & The Raiders: Had a top 25 album ion 1967, entitled Revolution, while having 4 top 40 singles, including "Him or Me - What's It Gonna Be" which went to #5 on the Billbaord charts.
• The Grass Roots: Released the tune Let' Live For Today in 1967, which climbed to #8 on the Billbaoard charts. That may be the band's 2nd most famous and successful tune after Midnight Conession, which was released the following year and went to #5 on the charts.
• The Monkees: Monkee-mania ran wild in 1967, as the band dominated not only the album charts but also the singles charts. The band had 4 albums go to #1 in 1967, including More Of The Monkees, which soent 18 weeks at the top, 3 more that Sgt Pepper's, and had six top 40 singles , including two at #1 in I'm A Believer and Daydream Believer; one at #2 in A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You and one at #3 in Pleasant Valley Sunday. Given that the Monkees were the biggest selling act in rock, the Monterey Pop organizers gave serious consideration to having them play the festival. In the end, they decided against it, but that didn't stop group members Micky Dolenz and Peter Tork from attending. Tork even introduced Buffalo Springfield, his favorite group, as well as Lou Rawls. In addition, Tork was involved in a bizarre incident during the Grateful Dead's set where he tried to stop fans from climbing on stage and dancing. To top it off, he also informed the crowd that The Beatles were not at the festival in disguise. Even at Monterey Pop, The Beatles and The Monkees, without playing a note, remained linked.
