Bruce Springsteen - Double Play 1973 - #2: In January 1973, Bruce Springsteen released his debut album, Greetings From Asbury Park, a title which paid tribute to his Jersey Shore roots. Critics loved the disc, with Robert Christgau writing “This boy has a lot more of the Dylan spirit than John Prine. His songs are filled with the absurdist energy and heart on sleeve pretension that made Dylan a genius instead of a talent.” The record buying public, however, was far less impressed. The album sold only 25,000 copies in its first year of release, and neither single, Spirts in The Night nor Blinded By The Light, dented the Billboard charts. In fact, the latter tune wouldn’t become a chart success until Manfred Man re-recorded it in 1977 and took the tune all the way to #1. Unduanted by the lack of commercial success, Springsteen went out on the road, playing small clubs across the US. This soundboard recording captures him on July 31, 1973, 45 years ago today, during the early show at My Father’s Place in Roslyn NY, across the river from his Jersey home.
