Santana 1980 - Double Play - #1: In the late 1970’s, Santana’s music began to move away from the traditional fusion of Latin, jazz, rock and blues toward a more album oriented rock (AOR) sound. That transition began with the album Inner Secrets in 1978, and continued on with Marathon in 1979 and Zeebop in 1981. While those albums produced some outstanding tracks, including, Stormy, Open Invitation, All I Ever Wanted and Winning, Santana’s core fan base questioned the band’s direction. One thing which did not change during this period, however, was the band’s ability to play dynamic live concerts. As this soundboard from Frankfurt from July 1, 1980, 34 years ago today, demonstrates, Carlos could still play guitar with the best of them and the band could electrify any concert venue. Download this one, then come back in 3 days for part 2 of this Double Play.
