Led Zep 1977 - #1: When the band launched their 1977 tour on April 1, they had gone 2 years without performing live. During that time, the band endured one of its most difficult periods. Robert Plant had sustained serious injuries in a car crash on August 5, 1975, forcing the cancellation of a world tour that was scheduled to begin just 10 days later. While recovering, he and Jimmy Page wrote songs for the band's next album, with Plant working from a wheelchair throughout the recording process. They entitled the disc, Presence, a name which symbolized that the band was still alive despite the troubles faced by their lead singer. While Presence, which was released in March 1976, went to number 1 on the Billboard charts in the US, it did not sell as well as prior Led Zep albums and received lukewarm reviews. Of course that didn’t stop the tour from selling out across North America, including a then record 6 nights at Madison Square Garden.
