GD 1985 - #1: Today we begin a 6 part entry featuring the Grateful Dead in the Spirng of 1985, the year the band celebrated their 20th anniversary. Deadheads tend to passionately debate the quality of the music that year. Some feel that the band, inspired by their milestone anniversary, played their best shows of the 80s. Others don't believe the music was much different from the prior years, and certainly not up to the standard of 1987 or 1989. I tend to lean in the direction that 1985 provided many inspired moments especially during the Spring run, though it’s clear that by year end, Jerry was mired deep in a cloud of drugs which would eventually contribute his near death coma in 1986. This soundboard, from June 14, 1985, 3 decades ago today, at one of the Dead’s favorite venue, The Greek Theater in Berkeley, is emblematic of the band’s new found creativity that year - inspired so choices such as Keep on Growin' from the Derek & The Dominoes, unique set list arrangements, such as Morning Dew to open the 2nd Set, and the return of old favorites that hadn’t been played in years, such as Comes A Time in set 2. While I'm not a proponent of mid 80s Dead, this one has some tasty moments. BTW, it appears that the encore, KYDJ, was not included.

Thanks for the kind words! The encore is there - its tracks 11 on disc 1 - it was put at the end of disc 1 to squeeze the show on 2 discs!
Four guys crammed in an orange 1971 super beetle, driving up from Southern CA to Berkeley. On the way I predicted the Dead would play Sargent Peppers because it was the 20th anniversary. I said "It was 20 years ago today captain trips taught the band to play, they have been going in and out of style but they are guaranteed to raise a smile so let me introduce to you the one and only Bobby Weir". Anyway we got there and right before the first set started they blasted Sargent Peppers over the sound system. Well, not the Dead playing it but close. What a fun weekend. The break out of Cryptical was a stunner.
Thinking it has been 30 years makes me feel old.

By the way. This show was actually three sets. There was a power outage during Hell In A Bucket. So there was a long break and then they came back out once things were fixed and did a four song mini set to finish off what should have been the first set. And they came out with the Keep On Growin with Phil singing. Quite a shock.
