GD 1976 - #1: Welcome to the first of 12 shows from the Dead’s return to touring in 1976. In October 1974, the Grateful Dead played their "farewell concerts" at Winterland in San Francisco, 5 nights of impassioned music that many Dead Heads thought might be the last tine they would see their beloved band. The band taped the shows for a live album (the double disc Steal Your Face, which hardly did justice to their performances) and a full length movie (The Grateful Dead movie, which was a far more fitting monument to those 5 concerts). While the Dead stayed away from touring in 1975, playing only 4 shows, the band members were busy with a host of other projects. They recorded the album Blues for Allah, which included The Music Never Stopped and the Help On The Way > Slipknot > Franklin's Tower segue. Jerry Garcia recorded the album Reflections, and toured with his own band, while Bob Weir joined up with the band, Kingfish. Garcia also spent countless hours directing production of the aforementioned Grateful Dead movie, which was released to critical acclaim in 1977. Phil Lesh, along with keyboardist Ned Lagin, released an album of improvisational electronic music, titled Seastones. While the band members kept busy, they all knew that nothing was as fulfilling as playing live. So in June 1976, the band launched their first tour in over 19 months and Dead Heads rejoiced. This soundboard recording captures night 1 of that tour, in Portland, Oregon, on June 3, 1976, 39 years ago today. For being away for such an extended period, the band sounds extremely sharp. The show is filled with tunes being played for the first time, including Lazy Lightning, Supplication, Might As Well, Samson & Delilah and The Wheel. The set list also has several unique song placements, which would be a hallmark of the 1976 tour, including Scarlet Begonias in the first set, Samson to open set 2, Around and Around in the middle of the 2nd set. and the Wheel as an encore. GD from 76 seems to get no respect but for me it is real nice. I have always liked this show. You forgot to mention that this was the first Dancin In The Streets since new years eve 1971 and the first in the new boogie style. They did a St. Stephen sound check this night that had to get the Dead Head excited since it had not been played since 12-31-1971. The next night was the first Mission In The Rain and the breakout of Cosmic Charlie that had not been played since 1-21-71. On the 9th they then did break out Saint Steven along with High Time. What a way to come back! The only thing that was missing was Dark Star and it would stay that way until 12-31-78, the closing of Winterland. These must have been exciting time to be on the Bus.

I don't know if you realize it but this file contains two versions of the 6/3/76 show. So when it is downloaded it is a 500+ MB behemoth instead of the 275 MB that is just the Charlie Miller version. Look at the files and you'll see one version (named berthad) embedded in the other. In any case, thanks for sharing this one!
