In 1976, Elton John was at the summit of the rock world. He had released numerous number 1 albums and singles, appeared in the movie Tommy, sold out arenas worldwide, including a then record 7 nights at Madison Square Garden, and was featured on the cover of Time magazine. While his climb to the peak had taken almost 10 years, the fall was quicker. His Blue Moves album, released in late 1976 and featuring a new backing band, did not fare as well as previous discs. In late 1977, overwhelmed with the stress of super stardom, he announced he was retiring from live performing. He spent much of the next 2 years in seclusion. When he returned to the stage in 1979, it was not at sold out stadiums with a full band, but at smaller arenas accompanied only by percussionist Ray Cooper. This soundboard, from May 28, 1979, 37 years ago today, captures one of those 2-man shows, this one from Moscow, where Sir Elton had the honor of becoming the first western rock star to play in Russia.
