Grateful Dead - 1987-05-02 - Palo Alto, CA (SBD)

Grateful Dead - 1980s:  As I've written on numerous occasions, I'm a big fan of the Grateful Dead's 1987 performances.  No, the band's playing wasn't up to the level of the 1970s. or even how they would perform form 1989 to 1991.  How could it be, given that Jerry Garcia had just recovered from a near fatal coma in 1986.  But that's exactly the point - Garcia had survived and the band had a new lease on life.  After only seeing the Dead twice between 1982 and 1986, I went to 9 shows in 1987. I saw 2 shows on their first East Coast tour since Jerry's recovery, a mammoth show with Bob Dylan at Giants Stadium and a 5 night run at Madison  Square Garden in September that included ny very favorite Dead show ever (a show picked for the 30 year box set) on September 18.  And every one of them was a celebration, a joyous occasion as every member of the audience realized that the tunes we had come to hold so dear would continue to live on, with the man in the black tee shirt stil playing guitar, still singing an d still serving as the unifying force that made the Grateful Dead more than just a band.  This soundboard recording, and the one will bring you tomorrow, captures The Dead in Palo Alto, back on home turf, after the aforementioned East Coast tour, on May 2, 1987, 29 years ago today.  Enjoy the band's rebirth and stop back tomorrow for another one from 1987.
