The Byrds - 1973-01-21 - Kansas City, MO (FM)

1970s - #3: As The Byrds took the stage on January 21,1973, 44 years ago today, as captured in this FM Broadcast, recording, the band was in its death throes. A few weeks later, after a concert in Ithaca, NY, Roger McGuinn fired long time bassist Skip Battin. After 2 more shows, with Chris Hillman filling in, McGuinn dissolved the band. But the Byrds were not yet completely dead. Part of the reason that McGuinn dismissed his tour compatriots was that he had a reunion with the original members of The Byrds in the works. McGuinn, Roger McGuinn, Gene Clark, David Crosby, Chris Hillman, and Michael Clark had reunited in October 1972 and spent a month recording an album together. With the disc set for release in March 1973, it made no sense to have 2 versions of The Byrds in existence. Unfortunately despite the fact that the excitement generated by the reunion of the original line up propelled the disc to #20 on the Billboard charts, the album was a critical disaster. As a result, the band called off plans for a tour and the reunion ended as quickly as it had come together. Thus, the Byrds disbanded for a second time in last than 2 months. When Roger McGuinn released his solo album in June 1973, The Byrds were officially gone for good.  Note - this show has been attributed to various dates from 1969 to 1973, but my research tends to point to Janaury 21, 1973 as the correct date.
