Fifty years ago this very day, on January 1, 1973, Bruce Springsteen did his first live radio show, on WBCN-FM in Boston. Springsteen was in town for a week of performances at Pall's Mall, 2 shows a night, from January 8 to 14. The concerts and the appearance on WBCN, were in support of his debut album, Greetings From Asbury Park, released 4 days earlier on January 5. That disc, though not a commercial success, received significant critical praise form the likes of Lester Bangs and Robert Christgau. Rolling stone would rank it 337 on its 2003 list of the 500 greatest albums of all time, as well as 37th o n its list of the best debut albums.
