Here's another surprising connection to the Grateful Dead. As most Deadheads know, Owsley Stanley served as the band’s first sound engineer and helped finance the start of the group’s career. He also became one of the first individuals to privately manufacturer LSD, supplying it to Ken Kesey and The Merry Pranksters for the Acid Tests in 1965 and 1966. The Dead were the house band for many of those Acid Tests. Owsley helped designed the Steal Your Face logo, and his nickname, Bear, served as the inspiration for the band’s Dancing Bear logo. Owsley and the band were busted “down on Bourbon Street” in 1970 for possession of marijuana, a tale immortalized in the Dead’s song, Truckin. Believe it or not, Owsley was also the inspiration for another song, the Steely Dan classic, Kid Charlemagne. The first 2 lines of the song - On the hill the stuff was laced with kerosene, But yours was kitchen clean - reference the fact that the LSD produced by Owsley was noted for its purity. The Technicolor motor home in the 3rd line refers to the psychedelic painted bus which was used by Kesey and Pranksters to travel from one acid test to the next! The name of that bus by the way was Furthur, which is also the name Bob Weir and Phil Lesh choose for one of their post-Grateful Dead collaborations.
