2010s - #5: The on again, off again musical relationship between Neil Young and Stephen Stills seems to be almost as old as rock and roll itself. The two were in Buffalo Springfield together, though disputes between them saw Neil walking away from the band on several occaisions (for example, he missed their appearance at Monterrey Pop), before the band finally broke up in 1968. Neil rejoined Stephen as part of CSNY in 1969, but that lasted only until mid 1970. CSNY regrouped in 1974 for a massive tour, only to split up once again by year's end. Then Stills and Young joined up for a tour in 1976 but Neil quit after just 19 shows, sending a note that read “Dear Stephen, funny how some things that start spontaneously end that way. Eat a peach, Neil." Over the next quarter century, the two mostly stayed apart, except for an occaisional charity gig such as Live Aid where CSNY reunited, or studio appearance, as when Young helped CSN record the album American Dream. Then in 2000, CSNY got back together for a full tour, which was followed by tours in 2002 and 2006. In 2010, the 2, along with Richie Furay, reformed Buffalo Springfield for two Bridge School Benefit shows. Despite rumors of a national tour, the Springfield played just a half a dozen shows in June 2011 before calling it quits. After that Stills andf Young again went their separate ways. They reunited for a good cause in April 25, 2015, a decade ago today as captured in this excellent audience recording, playing a set at the Light Up The Blues Benefit: Autism Speaks benefit. Will they ever play together again? Given their track record, who the heck really knows?
