The Grateful Dead had numerous connections to Stephen Stills and his band mates David Crosby, Graham Nash and Neil Young starting at Woodstock in. August 1969. CSNY played just their 2nd concert atthe iconic festival while the Dead, unfortunately, continued a tradition of not always playing their best on the biggest stages. Both bands also were scheduled to play Altamont in December of that year, but only CSNY took the stage. The Dead pulled out of the show after hearing that Marty Balin of the Jefferson Airplane was knocked unconscious by a member of the Hell’s Angels, who had been hired to provide security. The situation got even worse as we’ll discuss in our Rolling Stones entry later this month. In 1970, when CSNY went into the studio to record the album Déjà vu, Jerry Garcia agreed to play pedal steel guitar on the now iconic tune, Teach Your Children. In return, CSNY helped the Dead work on their harmonies for their upcoming albums Workingman’s Dead and American Beauty. Both bands also had long associations with Bill Graham, and performed at his memorial concert on November 3, 1991. As a solo artist, Stephen Stills joined The Dead on stage twice in 1969, on October 25 and December 12, and twice in 1983, on April 16 and 17. His set list includes Not Fade Away, the Buddy Holly tune which became a staple of the Dead;s live performances.
