1980s - #2: In 1981, Elvis Costello incredibly released 2 albums, Trust in January and Almost Blue in May. While the first disc reflected many off the punk, new wave and power pop sensibilities of his earlier work, the latter album was a complete departure from previous form. Almost Blue consisted entirely of country covers, including works originally written by Hank Williams, Merle Haggard, George Jones and Gram Parsons.  The disc was the first step in Costello's efforts to demonstrate he was more musically than simply one of the Angry Young Men of punk.  That said, when he hit the stage in Werchter on July 5, 1981, 42 years ago today, Elvis stuck to tunes from Trust and his earlier albums, not playing a single track from Almost Blue.  Maybe since the festival was titled ROCK Werchter, Costello didn't want to take any chances by playing country tunes!
