1960s - #2: For the Grateful Dead, the year 1969 saw them take the live performances deep into space, displaying a level of pyschedelic improvisation that had never been seen before, and has rarely been matched since. In reviewing the album Live Dead, which was band released in November 1969, the and featured their performances at the Fillmore West in late February/early March 1969, famed critic Robert Christgau wrote that side two of the album "contains the finest rock improvisation ever recorded." This soundboard recording capturs the Dead around the middle of that hostoric year, on July 11, 1969, 54 years aho today. Yet, as this concert shows, the Dead also used 1969 to hint at the next stage of their development as a band. The set includes Casey Jones, Dire Wolf and High Time, 3 tunes which would appear on the 1970s disc Workingman's Dead,. That album and American Beauty, also released in 1970, formed a one-two punch that showcased the band's Americana and folk roots, an almost 180 turn from the psychedelic 1960s. By the way, this show takes place in Flushing Meadow Park, the site of the 1964/65 World's Fair, a place near and dear to my heart. I spent my childhood in Flushing, and made many a trip to Flushing Meadows to use the playgrounds and visit the World's Fair! And nsince 1990, my wife and I have makde an annual pilgriamge to the park which is now home of the Billie Jean King Tennis Center, to watch the US Tennis Open!
