The Beach Boys - 1965-08-15 - Santa Monica, CA (SBD)

We’ve posted numerous Beach Boys shows here at So Many Roads, but almost all of them are from later in the band’s career.  Quality Recordings from the 1960’s, especially the early part of the decade, are extremely hard to find.  Today, however, we bring you a soundboard recording from August 15, 1965, 4 dozen years ago today, from Santa Monica, CA.  Somewhat ironic that the Beach Boys played a concert same day The Beatles performed their legendary Shea Stadium show, which we'll post later today! After all, just a few years later, Brian Wilson almost drove himself insane trying to emulate and surpass The Fab Four.  Download this one to hear The Beach Boys play the surf music that defined their early career.

Sorry to say, this is a rip from the official "Concert" LP, don't know if "Surfin USA" here is the studio track or another live version....
Greetings
Alex

Alex - not sure which official release you think this is. I don't see any offical Beach Boys albums from Santa Monica in 1965. The Beach Boys Concert album is from 1964 and contains only 13 tracks while this has 17.

Great post speedy, along with the beatles shea stadium, What a time for AM top forty radio. not only had beatles and beach boys but also the stones, dave clark five, hermans hermits, the who, supremes ,the list could go on forever, Im getting misty eyed remembering how great those days were. one question, Is Brian Wilson in this show.know he went off the deep end for a long time starting with all the flack he received for releasing pet sounds , but that was a year later in 1966.most of the later shows did not have him on stage as he was in no shape and also hated touring. Love Brian as he basicly was the beach boys sorry mike love, figured this show was early enough that he was still performing on stage ,If you could shed some light on this I would really appreciate it Thanks again speedy

Not much in the way pf info on Beach Boys 1965 shows, but from the one set list site I have, it does not appear that Brian was on stage for any summer 1965 shows. http://members.tripod.com/~fun_fun_fun/set60s.html

Speedy , just downloaded it and mike while introducing the band says that brian is on bass, hope that clears it up unless this is an earlier show.

Nice catch on the intros. Totally missed that when I was listening to this. So Brian was at this show!

This CD is a compilation of shows from 63 to 64. The Santa Monica show provided the raw tape for the commercial In concert LP(with overdubs). Tracks 13-17 are from an Australian show from 64.

One way to know this is not from 1965 is that California Girls and Help Me Rhonda are not included. They were both released by 1965.
In addition, Brian left the road in early 65.

Thanks for the info on the date being 1963/64 as opposed to 1965.

I too am curious as to the dates of this show speedy , the possibility of it being before 1965 is even better as brian is definitely performing here, just to hear that great voice of his belting out in my room. my favorite beach boys song of all time is worth this download all by itself. did you finally have a true date for this thanks again speedy

Don't have an exact date but based on feedback it does appear rhis is from 1964 and not 1965

Most of the tracks are from the official "Concert" LP (recorded August 64 in Sacramento CA with massive studio work done afterwards) and the reminding songs are from Sweden, November 1964. So yes, Brian is there, but not in 1965 and not in Santa Monica.
