On October 29, 1971, the Allman Brothers Band lost their co-founder, brother, guitarist, and spiritual leader in a tragic motorcycle accident. The death of Duane Allman could have crippled the band, but brother Greg, Dickie Betts, Berry Oakley Butch Trucks, Jai Johanny Johanson and Berry Oakley soldiered on. They went back out on the road in 1972, with Oakley playing a major role in keeping the band together, both on and off the stage. Incredibly, Oakley, the new de facto leader of the band would meet the same fate as his predecessor. He also died in a motorcycle accident, in November 1972, just over a year after Duane, at an intersection 3 blocks from where the guitarist perished. Even that tragedy, however, could not stop the Allmans. In 1973 they who once again rose from the ashes, releasing the single Ramblin’ Man which went all the way to #2 on the Billboard charts. This high quality audience recording captures the band on August 6, 1972, 41 years ago today, at the legendary Hollywood Bowl.
