Bruce Springsteen - 2004-10-02 - Cleveland OH (ALD IEM Matrix)

In October 2004, Bruce Springsteen, John Fogerty, REM, James Taylor, Neil Young Dave Mathews, Sheryl Crow and a host of other rockers performed a series of concerts in 8 key states leading up to the Presidential election.  Called the Vote For Change concerts, these shows were officially non-partisan, with the goal of getting people from all parties to register and vote, but most of the performers urged concert goers to vote for John Kerry against incumbent George Bush.  While the concerts did not seem to have much impact on the election - all 8 states voted as predicted prior to the shows, 4 for Kerry and 5 for Bush - they did demonstrate the continued connection between rock and social protest, a connection dating back to the protests of the 1960s.  This ALD/IEM matrix recording captures Bruce Springsteen’s set from October 2, 2004, 9 years ago today.  Download this one to hear Bruce with some help from Fogerty and REM call for political change. 

Bruce Springsteen/Bob Dylan Connections

• Bruce Springsteen signed a record deal with Columbia Records in 1972, with the help of John Hammond, who had signed Bob Dylan to the same label a decade earlier.
• In his early days, Springsteen was often called the next Bob Dylan. For example, Peter Knobler of Crawdaddy once wrote “He sings with a freshness and urgency I haven't heard since I was rocked by 'Like a Rolling Stone.”
• Springsteen inducted Dylan into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1988. 
• Also in 1988, when Springsteen headlined the Amnesty International Human Rights Now Tour, he included a cover of Dylan’s Chimes of Freedom in his set list. 
• Springsteen appeared with Dylan in Little Steven’s 1985 video for the song Sun City which was produced to protest apartheid. 
• According to legend, when Dylan first met Springsteen, Bob greeted Bruce by saying “Hey, I hear you’re the new me.”
