Johnny Cash - 1976-10-02 - Wheeling, WV (SBD)

By the middle of the 1970’s, Johnny Cash had firmly established his legacy as the Man in Black. Yet, while he was still recognized the world over, with a 1975 biography selling over 1.3 million copies, the popularity of his music had begun to decline. Whereas in the early 1970’s, his albums regularly went to the top of the country music charts, 2 of his 1975 releases failed to chart. It was the start of a long dry spell for Cash, whose solo albums failed to make any significant chart impact until the 1990s, when a whole new audience of fans discovered him. That said, during that period, he did record several highly successful albums with the Highwaymen (Cash, Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson and Waylon Jennings) as well as with Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis and Roy Orbison. In addition, he continued to tour regularly and successfully, playing to sold out crowds all over the world. This soundboard recording captures Cash in Wheeling West Virginia, on October 2, 1976, 37 years ago today. With help from wife June Carter, Cash performs a host of classics, as well as some wonderful covers, opening and closing his portion of the show with perhaps his 2 most famous tunes, Ring of Fire and I Walk The Line.

Johnny Cash/Bob Dylan Connections
  • On July 25, 1964, after performing at the Newport Folk Festival, gave Dylan his guitar, a country western tradition for showing admiration of another act, (go here to download that show)
  • In February 1969, Dylan and Cash spent 2 days on the studio together, sessions which produced an incredible duet on Bob’s Girl From North Country.(go here to download that session)
  • Cash would win a Grammy Award for writing the liner notes for Dylan’s album Nashville Skyline
  • Dylan would appear on the first episode of The Johnny Cash Television show, playing 3 songs, including the aforementioned Girl From North Country
  • Johnny and wife June Carter Cash were part of the lineup for the Dylan 30th anniversary concert, playing It Ain’t Me Babe. Their duet on that tune is considered one of the best cover versions of any Dylan song.
