We kick off our “We’re An American Band (North American, that is)" theme with San Francisco’s own, the Grateful Dead. Interestingly, while the 5 original band members (Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, Bill Kreutzmann, Phil Lesh, and Ron “Pigpen” McKernan were all born in or nearby the city that’s home to the Golden Gate Bridge, all of it later members hailed from other parts of the US:

• Long time drummer Mickey Hart was from Brooklyn, NY. 
• Keith Godchaux was born in Seattle, Washington 
• Donna Jean Godchaux hailed from Alabama 
• Brent Mydland was born in Germany, though his parents moved to San Francisco when he was one
• Wince Welnick was born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona
• Bruce Hornsby hailed from Virginia
