In April 1970, Jimi Hendrix launched his Cry of Love Tour, which would turn out, unfortunately, to be the last one he undertook. He was accompanied by Billy Cox on bass and Mitch Mitchell on drums, and the trio was often billed as the Jimi Hendrix Experience, even though only 2 of the 3 original members, Hendrix and Mitchell, were present as Cox had replaced Noel Redding. Hendrix went on tour, in part, to earn money to repay Warner Bros for a loan they made to him to help build his Electric Lady Studios in New York. He was also anxious to test out new material he had been recording for a forthcoming album, tentatively entitled, First Rays Of The New Rising Sun. His set list would include, therefore, such new songs as Hey Baby, Lover Man, Freedom, Dolly Dagger and Ezy Ryder, just to name a few. This soundboard recording captures Jimi in Hawaii on July 30, 1970, 4 dozen years ago today. Jimi played 2 shows that day, both at the Maui Halakeala Crater in Hawaii, an incredible setting for what turned out to be the next to last time he would play in the US (the last US show would be on August 1 in Honolulu). Download this one to hear Jimi less than 2 months before his tragic death on September 18, 1970.
