1973:  While the album Harvest, released in February 1972, was a massive success for Neil Young. the following months proved to be trying times for him. On a personal level, his first child was diagnosed with cerebral palsy. On the musical front, he had to fire Crazy Horse guitarist Danny Whitten because of drug us. Tragically, just a few days later, Whitten died of an overdose.  Young described the situation to Cameron Crowe who was then writing for Rolling Stone magazine:: “we were rehearsing with him and he just couldn't cut it. He couldn't remember anything. He was too out of it. Too far gone. I had to tell him to go back to L.A. 'It's not happening, man. You're not together enough.' He just said, 'I've got nowhere else to go, man. How am I gonna tell my friends?' And he split. That night the coroner called me from L.A. and told me he'd OD'd. That blew my mind. I loved Danny. I felt responsible. And from there, I had to go right out on this huge tour of huge arenas. I was very nervous and ... insecure."  Burdened by heartache, Neil struggled throughout the tour, especially with is voice and with the band's performance, especially drummer Kenny Buttrey, who he eventually replaced. This excellent audience recording captures Neil during that very difficult time, with a liitel help from David Crosby & Graham Nash,  in San Francisco on March 22, 1973, 44 years ago today.
