Santana 1972 - Back To Back To Back - #1: As promised when we announced our theme for this month, we have several entries where we will bring you 3 or even 4 shows in a row from a band, and this is our first one!  In October 1972, Santana released their 4th studio album, entitled Caravanserai. The disc was a departure from the band's trademark fusion of salsa, rock, and jazz, instead concentrating mostly on jazz based instrumental passages. The disc was also the last to feature Gregg Rolle and Neil Schon, who left the band to start Journey. While the disc would sell over 1 million  copies and reach #8 on the Billboard charts, the record company was concerned about the how the drastic shift in style would impact the band's long term commercial success. Clive Davis,, then President of Columbia Records,ceven told Carlos that he felt the guitarist was committing career suicide. Sanatna went on tour in Europe in support the album during November and December 1971.  This soundboard recording captures the band near the end of that tour, in Amsterdam on December 3, 1972, 46 years ago today.  Download this one, then come back tomorrow and the next day for parts 2 and 3 of this entry.
