Grateful Dead 1986 - Back To Back To Back - #1: Those of you who have been following this blog know that we’ve spent quite a bit of time on Jerry Garcia’s triumphant return in 1987 after falling into a diabetic coma in mid 1986. In doing that, we’ve cheated just a bit, because while 1987 featured some excellent Grateful Dead and Jerry Garcia Band concerts, Garcia actually returned to the stage in late 1986. In fact, this entry, a soundboard from December 15, 1986, 32 years ago today, captures Garcia’s first post-coma Grateful Dead concert, in Oakland, California. Is it the best Grateful Dead concert ever? Of course not.  But is it one of the most emotional? Absolutely.  Folks forget how close we came to losing Jerry in 1986.   That's why I never criticize the band's performances in the late 1980's and 1990's, or compare them to the earlier years.  It has become very fashionable to put down the band's later years, but I am always thankful we had those shows, because it all came so close to ending in 1986.   The crowd that December night clearly understood that fact, erupting during the opening Touch of Grey, as the I Will Survive refrain now had more meaning than ever.  More heartfelt emotion filled the building during Candyman, when Jerry sang the line “Hand me my old guitar. Pass the whiskey round. Want you to tell everybody you meet, the Candyman's in town”! Deadheads in attendance, and Jerry himself, said there wasn’t a dry eye in the house that night.
