In November 1973, Billy Joel released Piano Man, his first album on Columbia Records, and 2nd disc overall (1971's Cold Spring Harbor had been released by Family Productions and was mastered at the wrong speed, resulting in a commercial and critical flop). The title track, a fictionalized retelling of Joel's experiences while working as a lounge singer in Los Angeles under the pseudonym Bill Martin, peaked at  #25 on the Billboard Charts. The album climbed to #27 on the US Billboard 200.  This soundboard recording captures Joel on tour in support of his breakthrough disc, in Denver on May 10, 1974, 45 years ago today.
