Led Zeppelin launched their 1973 North American on May 4, about a month after the release of the band’s 5th album, Houses of The Holy, which had gone to the top of the charts in both the US and UK. Led Zep would play outdoor stadiums for the first time on this run, including a show in Tampa on the 2nd night of the tour that drew 56,800 fans, breaking the attendance record set by The Beatles at Shea Stadium in 1965. The shows also incorporated more theatrics and special effects, including dry ice, lasers, backdrop mirrors, hanging mirror balls and pyrotechnics. The last 3 shows of the tour at Madison Square Garden, were filmed and taped for use in compiling the band’s first concert movie and its accompanying live album soundtrack, both entitled The Song Remains The Same, which would be released in 1976. This soundboard recording captures the band early on in that tour, in San Diego on May 28, 1973, 46 years ago today.
