During the Grateful Dead’s 18 month hiatus from October 1974 to June 1976, Jerry Garcia engaged in a host of side projects. Those ranged from editing the Grateful Dead movie to recording new material to forming a new band known as Legion of Mary. In addition to Garcia, Legion of Mary (LOM) included Merl Saunders on keyboard, Martin Fierro on sax, and Ron Tutt on drums. While the band’s tenure was short, Garcia used it to continue to explore and experiment with a host of musical styles. In their live shows, the band melded together an eclectic mix blues, funk, reggae, rock, psychedalia, and especially jazz. This soundboard recording from Berkeley on May 21, 1975, 44 years ago today, is a perfect example of the breath and range of music covered by LOM. The band played R&B songs such as I Feel Like Dynamite, Motown/Soul/Stax tunes such as Creepin' and That's What Love Will Make You Do, as well as reggae classics such as The Harder They Come. Perhaps almost as interesting is that the set list does not include a single Grateful Dead tune. Download this soundboard to hear a very different side of Jerry Garcia.
