Bob Weir’s solo efforts have included successful stints with Kingfish along with a wonderful pairing with bassist Rob Wasserman in Ratdog. A somewhat unusual chapter, however, was written in the early 1980s when he fronted Bobby & The Midnites. The Midnites originally included Brent Mydland of the Grateful Dead on keyboards, Matthew Kelly from Kingfish on guitar, Bobby Cochran from Steppenwolf on guitar, Tim Bogert from the Vanilla Fudge on bass and Billy Cobham, who had played with Miles Davis, on drums. Despite the star studded lineup, their self titled debut album made little commercial or critical impact. In 1982, Kelly, Mydland and Bogert left the band. Weir recruited Alphonso Johnson of Weather Report to take over on bass and added Dave Garland on keyboards. That lineup lasted until March 1983, when Johnson was replaced by Kennu Gradny on bass. This soundboardd recording captures the final configuration of the Midnites in Washington DC on September 25, 1984, 39 years ago today. Five days later, the band would play its final show in Valley Stream, NY.
