The Jefferson Airplane were the quintessential 1960s band. The were leading lights of the summer of love and of pyschedaelic muisc. They were anti establoshment and opposed the Viet Nam War.  they played at both Monterrey Pop and Woodtsock, two festivals that defined the late 1960s.  Thus, it might not been so surprising that the 1970s proved to be their undoing. In February 1970, the band dismissed drummer Spencer Dryden, who was burned our from 4 years on what he called the acid "merry go round." The band would not release an album that year, after 5 releases in the previous 4 years. Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Cassady began spending more time on their side project, Hot Tuna, which did not sit well with other band members. Marty Balin was also becoming disillusioned with the Airplane, and would eventually depart the band in March 1971. In November 1970, Paul Kantner would release his first solo album, the science fiction-themed Blows Against The Empire. When the band took the stage, therefore, at Winterland on September 22, 1972, 51 years ago today, as captured in this FM broadcast they must have know the end was near.  Marty Balin joined them on stage for the last song that night.  It woukld be the last concert ever performed by the Jefferson Airplane.
