Unfortunately for the Grateful Dead, their performance at Woodstock was not one of their finest moments, to say the least. They were plagued by PA problems, some of their own doing as their sound engineer, the legendary LSD chemist Owsley “Bear” Stanley, had tinkered with the equioment before the band took the stage, including leaving several wires ungrounded. Bob Weir touched one of those wires during St. Sptephen, shocking him and knocking out the PA system, causing a lengthy delay. The fact that the band had over-ingested LSD didn't help matters. Nothing quite worked as it should have, and the band was so dissapointed in their performance that they did not allow any of their set to be included in the original Woodstock sound track album.
This soundboard recording captures the Dead 2 decades after Woodstock, in Berkeley on August 17, 1989, 35 yeras ago today. The summer of 1989 marked the start of the Dead's last great run, a 3 years stretech that ran until 1991 that we have documneted at lenght on this blog.
