The end of the Dr. Pepper Music festival in Wollman Rink in 1976 did not mean the end of all concerts in Central Park. The vast 843 acre park (go here for more about this incredible oasis in the middle of the Big Apple) would still host numerous special performances by a litany of rock’s greatest legends, including a Simon and Garfunkel reunion in 1981, Diana Ross in 1985, Paul Simon in 1991 and Dave Matthews in 2003, not to mention a very special performance in 1980 that will be the subject of our next post. As part of New York City’s Millennium Celebration, Sting played a free concert in Central Park’s East Meadow on September 12, 2000, a dozen years ago today. Best Buy sponsored the concert to herald the opening of the first 15 of 40 planned retail stores in New York and New Jersey. The concert was Sting’s final stop on the US leg of his Brand New Day Tour, before heading off to Africa, Asia, Australia and South America.
