1985 - In the rock world, the years 1985 and 1986 belonged to Dire Straits. In May 1985, the band released the disc Brothers in Arms, which entered the British charts at #1. The album would also climb to #1 on the Billboard charts in the US, spending 9 weeks at the top spot. The disc produced three top 20 singles in the US, So Far Away at #19, Walk of Life at #7 and the monster hit, Money For Nothing, which went to #1. The video for that song went into heavy rotation on MTv in the US, in part since it used the station’s tag line, “I want my MTv” in the backing vocals sung by Sting. The band toured extensively over the next 2 years in support of the album, playing 247 shows in over 100 different cities, including a historic performance at Live Aid.
