another great neil post speedy, thanks so much, why do you feel modern music has plummeted so badly ,it seems every decade since the 70s it has gotten worse and worse.the 80s were just ok the 90s got considerably worse and since the turn of the century music as we once knew it has virtually disappeared.. I know that there are probably still some die hard talented people out there that want to make good music but they are laboring in obscurity playing in dives unable to get record contracts while the no talent Mileys, Beibers, Carries, Taylors Britneys of the world get all the pub recognition for their vulgar butt shaking on stage to lipsynking vocals. How did it come to this? even lighter fare from the 70s was light years better than this crap.been watching a lot of youtube lately ,saw Olivia Newton John singing those gorgeous ballads on the Carson show back in 74 75, no lipsynking no vulgarity just the face and voice of an angel evoking emotions from the heart. my first celebrity crush , so strikingly beautiful and wholesome with a voice that would bring you to tears. you also had Karen Carpenter who could also sing like an angel. John Denver, Joni Mitchell, Jackson Browne Bread , Badfinger ecc and these were the top 40 artists that had big hits even Abba, to name another top 40 hit machine. Remember all the hits that McCartney had with wings as well as Elton did and this was just top 40 alone. it dosent even scratch the surface of the total package of how many great artists were around back then. Remember how much flak disco used to get in the late 70s. would gladly welcome disco back compared to the crap today. thanks for letting me ramble and vent ,Watching those Olivia clips got me very emotional i guess as i watched them when they first aired 40 years ago. Man how times have changed . think ill go have a stiff drink and try to shake it off .i feel very old,
Think it simply comes down to Dylan's famous line - "the times they are a' changing". Music isn't as central to kids today as it was to us. They have so many other avenues to pursue - computers, internet, video games, sports we never heard of like fencing, lacrosse, field hockey, etc that music just doesn't play the same role in their lives.
i was a sports fan growing up as well. I take it that you are a yankee fan. Its not just music its everything, Back then baseball was king .football. was 2nd Remember when pitchers went 9 innings and there was no such thing as pitch counts? Im sure if you follow the yanks you remember Guidrys 78 season 25 and 3 with an era of under 2 and all those strikeouts and complete games. me i was a kid watching Bob Gibson Sandy Koufax and Tom Seaver. , there was no pitch count for those guys . watched on tv as Gibson struck out 17 tigers in the opening game of the 68 series also watched Namath and the jets upset the colts. Big boxing fan as well. Ali was everyware back then as well as all the great fighters Frazier, Foreman, Norton, Holmes, Shavers ecc even the lighter weight fighters , you had Duran, Sugar Ray Leonard. Hearns, Hagler, Arguello Boom Boom Mancini just to name a few Today Boxing is a dying sport where all the champs dodge top contenders unlike the past where all the top guys fought each other on a regular basis. going from 15 rounds down to 12 didnt help either. Point is its not just music its sports as well. Granted young people have more options today but what about the type of music today , Why and how do we go from someone as talented and wholesome a Olivia to trashy slutty people like Miley and Beiber, in 40 years.
